In order to visualize an idea, I produce a collage that can carry lots of information together as a medium. The term of collage comes from the French phrase; papiers collés which used as describing the process of cutting and pasting papers onto different surfaces. So, collage expresses both the technique and result of the work in terms of; pieces of paper, fabric, photograph or other elements comes together and applied onto a surface.
What’s more about it is the relationship in between the collages and architecture. Firstly, a collage can be a design tool in architecture. And also a beneficial medium for the analysis process. In addition to that, it is another tool for presentation phase. It allows both transforming and adapting in the work that has done.
Moreover, about how collages become more used in architecture Archigram has a role on that. Archigram is group came together in the early 60s. Their name comes from the combination of the words “archi” tecture and tele “gram”. Instead of practicing architecture they mainly focussed on the ideas. To describe their ideas they used collages as a medium of communication. They provide illusion of real space or multiple overlapping views as a counter of urbanization as the dream. They were against the reality of form. So they implied another reason for working on collages as the aim of transmitting their message most effectively.
Furthermore, in one of their work which is again about expressing an imagination and an idea is; Instant City. It is about the moving objects and technology to made a city mobile in terms of making a community come together to build an audiovisual event. With that moving city the concept of time and space had changed in to the network of information. The main illustration is about deliver urban living through rural areas by hot air balloons. That design transforms an urban city detached from the ground level and make it moving to expose the ways of urban living. in terms of carrying education and facilities belongs to an urban center due to entertain people. Seeing that, utilization of those on the project is about; Archigram’s aim was to transform the existing situation into a reactive environment and that is something I tried to achieve in my project. It is more likely to, instead of carrying a metropol to rural areas but carrying an activity which does not exists in Mevlana Boulevard which is pedestrian movement. So that the reactive environment started to occur in that area. In instant city, carried information made people connect with each other and have their experience with those urban spaces, as I tried to defined that with an activity comes from the streets that people can interact with each other and the spaces based on that site.
After approaching carrying concept that much, I used the hot air balloons of Archigram’s Instant City. However, instead of holding the spaces, they are attached to people who are on the streets. Because of, in this case mobility comes from the pedestrian activity in there which is one of the main concepts of Archigram’s work. It is more like, inside that crowded capital, the surrounding area of the Mevlana Boulevard is mainly high rise buildings and allows only accesses with cars and it has goes in that manner through the way. Yet, addition of those social streets will attract pedestrians and brings something new to that region which is a pedestrian movement. In this case, that pedestrian movement has considered as what leads mobility.Because, since the purpose has increasing pedestrian usage with the streets so the mobile thing is human activity in there. Furthermore, in their times, Archigram got affected by the pop art therefore, they used the elements of pop art in most of their works. That’s where the dinosaur comes from in between the city silhouette. They got extinct because of an extreme climatic event therefore having it in the ecological sense. And in addition, the dinosaur has it’s own hot air balloon too due to it has it’s own mobility.
